Walter F. Bliss Sr.

Walter F. Bliss Sr. died Saturday, May 3, 2014, at River Region Medical Center. He was 69.
Born in New Orleans, he was a lifelong resident of Vicksburg. He was the son of the late Noah D. Bliss and Annie Marguerite Lick Bliss. He served in the Navy from 1962 until 1966. Mr. Bliss was employed by the City of Vicksburg as assistant director of public works, retiring in 2009.
He was active with the Culkin Athletic Association for a number of years, serving as a coach and board member.
Mr. Bliss was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother.
He is survived by his wife, Janice Barnes Bliss of Vicksburg; daughter, April Bliss and her fiancé, Carl Upton; son, Walter Franklin Bliss Jr. and fiancée, Jessica Crews; five grandchildren, Janicea Wilson, Alexis Wilson, Jazzlyn Shelley, Noah Bliss and Logan Bliss; sister, Norma “Cookie” Burnett (Glen) of Winfield, La.; and a brother, James Bliss of Collins.
Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, 2014, at Riles Funeral Home with the Rev. Kent Campbell, pastor of Woodlawn Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be at Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home, and Tuesday from 1 p.m. until the hour of service.
Pallbearers will be J. D. Bliss, Trent Hanegan, Joe Curtis. Alvin McCullum, Ricky Pennington Jr. and James Rainer.
Honorary pallbearers will be Pete Buford, Dr. Paul Pierce IV, Dr. Robert Ford and current and former employees of the City of Vicksburg.
