Warren County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call Sunday afternoon just after 1 p.m. for a stranded motorist with an infant on Hwy 80 and discovered a woman covered in blood. Kimberly Nicole Chatman, 23, of National Street, told deputies that she had been in a fight. Visible to deputies inside the maroon Cadillac was a purse and identification of another person.

Sheriff Martin Pace along with Sgt. Jason Bailess, Lt. Jonathon Hearn and Sgt. Sam Winchester went to the 3600 block of Warriors Trail for a welfare check. They discovered the front door unsecured and could see blood on the floor. In a back room of the house was a 70-year old woman lying in a pool of blood. She was transported by Vicksburg Fire Department ambulance directly to University of Mississippi Medical Center where she was listed in fair condition this morning.

Investigators working the scene for several hours found signs of forcible entry through a window and evidence that the house had been burglarized.

Pace said they believe the home invasion and assault occurred during the early morning hours of Sunday. The suspect and the victim were acquainted but not related.

Chatman was arrested around 1:30 p.m. and charged with home invasion burglary, robbery and attempted murder. She was being held in the Warren County Jail this morning with no bond. The 6-month old infant, whom she identified as her child, has been turned over to the care of the Department of Human Services.

Pace said the investigation is continuing as investigators work to inventory stolen items and additional arrests could be made.

Chatman was expected to have her initial court appearance this morning.
