Horace W. Newman Sr.

Horace W. Newman Sr. of Valley Park died Sunday, May 4, 2014, at River Region Medical Center. He was 82.
He served in the United States Army. He was a member of Valley Park Baptist Church.
Mr. Newman worked in sales for 18 years with Jackson Cigar and Tobacco Co. He retired from farming in Issaquena County in 1992. He was involved in numerous organizations and held many offices, including president of the Issaquena County Farm Bureau for 26 years, past president of Sharkey-Issaquena MSU Alumni Association, on the national board of directors of the MSU alumni association, chairman of Farm Services Committee-Sharkey and Issaquena County, and commissioner of soil conservation services
He received the 1985 MSU Red Ruffin award, the 1987 MSU distinguished service award, and was on the Board of Directors of Mississippi Farm Bureau for four years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, J. C. Newman Sr. and Minnie Bell Prine Newman; two sons, Floyd Newman and Benton Newman; brothers, Carl Newman, Buddie Newman, Floyd Newman, and Jimmy Newman; sisters, Louise Bunch, Rachel Fournier and Kathleen Lavecchia.
Survivors include his wife, Florence Newman; a daughter, Patricia Hughes (Tommy) of Columbus; a son, Horace “Butch” Newman Jr. (Sue) of Newton; grandchildren, Dru Holdiness (Mark) of Vicksburg, Ryan Newman (Laura) of Vicksburg, Cole Shimfessel of Newton, Huck Horace Newman of Newton, Amber Hughes Bazzell (Shane) of Columbus, Kala Hughes Leathers (Preston) of Starkville, Price Hughes of Columbus and Dylan Hughes of Columbus; and great-grandchildren, Hunt Holdiness, Hank Holdiness, Hagen Bazzell, Corbin Bazzell, Presley Leathers, Audrey Grace Newman and Elizabeth Ryan Newman.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 7, 2014, at Frank J. Fisher Funeral Home with the Rev. Ronnie Purser officiating. Burial will be at Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Visitation will be today from 5 to 8 p.m., and Wednesday from 1 p.m. until the hour of service at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Robert Morgan, James Taylor, Ike Sylvester, Ricky Prestianni, Billy Aden, Bert Clark, Joe Gex, Frank Newman, Jimmy Newman, John Correro and James G. Newman.
Honorary pallbearers will be James McPhail, Joe Addy, Ray Burroughs, Strat Karatassos, Norman Browning, James R. Carter, Larry Hood, Vernon Keyes, Rob Morgan, Josh Morgan, Brett Morgan, C. J. Clark, Phil Silva, Ron Polk, Hank Moseley, John Brady, Dr. Briggs Hopson, Dr. Joe Ross, Dr. Yoshinobu Namihira, Phares Griffin, Dr. Linda Rockhold, Dr. Daniel Edney, Robert “Sonny” Mathes, Dr. Mark Keenum and Gwin Taylor. Memorial pallbearers are Milton Robichaux, Fred Wells and Leonard Miller.
