In a small ceremony attended by about 20 people at Triumph Church Monday, Vicksburg’s mayor married Valencia Renee Jones, who works at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Engineering Research and Development Center. Triumph pastor Rev. Mike Fields officiated, and the Rev. Linda Sweezer, pastor of House of Peace Worship Church, prayed over the couple.

The new Mrs. Flaggs’ daughter, Brittany, was maid of honor, while state Rep. Ed Blackmon Jr., D-Canton, “my best friend,” was Flaggs’ best man, and his brother, Reginald Flaggs was groomsman.

“I thought the time had come,” Flaggs, 61, said. “I had been single long enough, and I wanted to lead by example. I wanted young men to know that as (the apostle) Paul said, ‘Sometimes, it’s better to marry.’ As I said in my vows, I have every intention to do right, both personal and professionally.”
