An all-you-can-eat buffet and bake sale have become traditional offerings for a local church and on Saturday Porters Chapel United Methodist Church will hold the 41st annual Porters Chapel Day in the fellowship hall of the church.

“Porters Chapel Day — as it is called now — began in the very early 1970’s and first started as a booth at the Miss-Lou Fair to raise money for the church,” said Buford “BB” Evans.

Evans is a longtime member of the church, which is located at 200 Porters Chapel Road.

The fundraiser moved to the church where is has stayed since 1973 and has grown into a major church-wide fundraising project, he said.

Proceeds are used for building maintenance, grounds upkeep, mission projects, youth projects and community projects that are supported by the church, said Evans.

Each year the event is spearheaded by either the Frances Hathorn Circle or the Porters Chapel Men’s Club, and this year’s rotation will be led by the men’s club, said Evans.

The bake sale, which includes homemade cakes, pies and cookies will begin at 9:30 a.m. and will continue until all the “goodies” are gone and the dinner will begin at 11.

The cost is $10 and $6 for ages 10 and younger.

“Deliveries can be arranged if six or more plates are ordered,” said Evans.
