A Vicksburg man awaited an initial appearance in municipal court this morning for hitting a child over the head with a wooden plank.

Willie Qualls, 41, 1414 Martin Luther King Blvd., was arrested at 7:45 p.m. Thursday and charged with aggravated assault for hitting a 13-year-old over the head with a 1×4, Vicksburg police Capt. Sandra Williams said.

The teen’s mother was at Qualls’ residence, where the incident took place, Williams said. Previously, the child was warned not to go the residence, for reasons unknown, Williams said. Qualls and the teen, whose home is listed in the 2100 block of Baker Street, on a police report of the incident, are related, Williams said. No connection was established on the report between Qualls and the mother, Williams said.
