Grambling slows Alcorn State’s surge

Johnathan Williams had three total touchdowns and Grambling State survived Alcorn State’s fourth-quarter rally for a 28-21 victory on Saturday.

In a matchup of Southwestern Athletic Conference division leaders, Grambling (4-3, 4-0) also became the lone undefeated team in conference play by knocking off Alcorn (5-2, 3-1).

Williams opened the scoring with a 2-yard touchdown run and extended the lead to 21-0 on a 26-yard touchdown pass to Ka’Jandre Domino. Williams added his second touchdown run early in the third quarter to make it 28-7 before Alcorn State rallied with a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns.

Grambling sealed the victory on the final play, stopping the Braves’ hook-and-lateral play near the 20.

Zerick Rollins found Alondrea Young for a 5-yard touchdown pass — on a fake field goal — to cut the Braves’ deficit to 21-7 before halftime.

Miss. Valley St. 27, Jackson St. 23

Joshua Rice caught five passes for 91 yards, including a game-winning 36-yard touchdown from Quantavius Peterson with 1:46 remaining, and Mississippi Valley State rallied from 11 points down in the third quarter to beat Jackson State.

It was Valley’s first win over Jackson State since 1994, and just its sixth in 62 meetings between the in-state rivals. Jackson State leads the all-time series 54-6-2.

Peterson, who entered the game in relief of starter Patrick Ivy, finished 8-of-12 for 73 yards passing while adding 56 yards rushing and a touchdown. Ivy finished with 71 yards passing and Jeremy Dobson led the Delta Devils (2-5, 1-4 SWAC) with 71 yards rushing and a score.

LaMontiez Ivy had 293 yards passing and a touchdown to lead Jackson State (3-4, 1-3).

Mississippi College 56, Faith 14

Chris Ingram ran for 100 yards and two touchdowns, and Mississippi College routed the University of Faith despite finishing the game with zero passing yards.

Mississippi College (1-4) attempted just eight passes and completed two — one for minus-4 yards in the second quarter and another for 4 yards in the third.

The Choctaws did rush for 276 yards and scored three defensive touchdowns.

Bluefield College 45, Belhaven 27

Sam Bennett rushed for 138 yards and two touchdowns, and Bluefield College (4-5) totaled 446 yards on the ground as a team to beat Belhaven (2-4).

Adrian Pope had 115 yards for Bluefield, and Marion Harris had 91. Quincey Mock added 79 yards and a touchdown, and quarterback Ashten Dixon ran for two scores. Dixon was 1-of-5 passing for 5 yards and a TD.

Belhaven had just 43 rushing yards in the game, although Kadero Edley ran for three touchdowns. Edley carried the ball six times for 32 yards.

Belhaven quarterback Mickey Forrest completed 30 of 59 passes for 434 yards and a touchdown. He was intercepted four times.

Co-Lin 41, Hinds 21

Joshua Bates ran for two touchdowns, Daniel Fitzwater threw two TD passes, and Copiah-Lincoln (5-2, 3-1 MACJC South Division) scored 21 consecutive points in the second half to blow out Hinds Community College (4-3, 2-2).

Joshua Dixon ran for 68 yards and a touchdown for Hinds on only 10 carries.
