Dr. Teddy “Ted” Barnette Cottrell

Dr. Teddy “Ted” Barnette Cottrell, 79, of Fort Payne, Ala., previously of San Antonio, died on Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2014, in Round Rock, Texas.
Dr. Cottrell was born on May 17, 1935, in Baltimore, the son of Dr. Hugh Barnette and Velma Agnes (Hayes) Cottrell.
He graduated from Maine Township High School in Park Ridge, Ill., and completed his bachelor’s degree at Millsaps College in Jackson.
He married Ellen Maucine Coles on September 2, 1961, in Vicksburg, Mississippi.
Surviving family members include his wife of 53 years, Ellen (Coles) Cottrell of Fort Payne, formerly of Vicksburg; his four children: Sharon (Cottrell) Taylor and husband Robert of Biloxi, Capt. Hugh Bryan Cottrell (USAF) and his wife Suzanne of Abilene, Texas, Todd Barnette Cottrell and wife Kim of Round Rock, Texas, and Dr. Duane Coles Cottrell and wife Elisa of Newark, Delaware.
He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, Brittany (Taylor) Layton of Pascagoula, Lauren Taylor, student at the University of Southern Mississippi, Tristan Cottrell, student at Wayland Baptist University, Kristen Cottrell, student at Texas A&M University, Allison Cottrell, student at University of North Texas, Savannah Taylor, student at Mississippi College, Lianna Cottrell of Abilene, Texas, Hunter and Logan Cottrell of Round Rock, Texas, and Cason and Jack Cottrell of Newark, Del.
Preceding him in death are his parents Dr. H. B. Cottrell (June 20, 1978), Mrs. Velma Cottrell (March 18, 1967) and sister, Flo Krausser (Oct. 17, 2001).
Upon graduating from Millsaps in 1957, Ted joined the United States Navy as a bombardier navigator and served on the USS Midway. He was honorably discharged from active duty December 1960, later attending Florida State University and earning a Ph.D. in psychology in 1965.
Ted spent the rest of his professional career as a pediatric psychologist, beginning at the University of Alabama Birmingham Medical Center and finishing his career with the United States government.
In addition to a lifelong love of aviation, Ted loved to travel and photograph his 11 grandchildren. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Fort Payne, Alabama.
At his request, Dr. Cottrell has been cremated.
A memorial service will be held at Hawkins United Methodist Church in Vicksburg at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, 2014. Dr. Cottrell’s two sons, Bryan and Duane, will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in honor of Dr. Ted Cottrell can be made through the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.
