UTICA — Graveside services for Johnny W. Hines, 71, of Monroe, La. will be 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22, 2014, at Utica Cemetery in Utica with the Rev. Keith McVay officiating.
Mr. Hines was born Feb. 19, 1943. He died Nov. 19, 2014.
He graduated from Utica High School and was inducted into the hall of fame at Belhaven College and Hinds Junior College for basketball. Johnny was a sports fanatic and loved all sports, especially anything LSU and he loved to watch game shows.
He devoted his life to education and coaching, where he taught special education, and was a coach and became principal after many years. Mr. Hines taught and coached at Coahoma County High, Utica and Terry High Schools, before becoming principal at Terry and Pearl High Schools.
In the 1980s, Mr. Hines moved to West Monroe, La., where he coached girls basketball at West Monroe High School. He was the principal at Calhoun High School and West Ouachita High School until his retirement.
Papa John was a distinguished educator who dedicated his life to enhancing the lives of his students and athletes, but he was most proud of being a husband, a father and a grandfather. He would truly get a gleam in his eye when talking about the accomplishments of his grandchildren and made every effort to be at every activity they had. You never saw Papa John that he didn’t have a smile on his face, a kind word to be said or a wonderful story to be told.
Johnny is preceded in death by his parents, Minor and Carrie Hines; his wife, Connie S. Hines; and sisters, Bernice Currie and Flois Hines.
Survivors include his children, Dakin Hines and wife Tashia, Ricky Fava and wife Julee, and Cindy Fava; grandchildren, Taylor Hines, Hunter Hines and Pheebie Fava; brother, Minor L. Hines Jr.; sister, Cornelia Bullock and husband Ray; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Hunter Hines, Randy Bullock, Lamar Hines, Dwayne Hines, Garet Titus and Ty Titus.
Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m., Saturday at Glenwood Funeral Home in Vicksburg.
