Thousands came out to visit and tour the Kansas City Southern Holiday Express train when it came to Vicksburg in 2012, and this year the 14th annual free event is scheduled to arrive at 4 p.m. Friday at 1010 Levee St.
Dressed in lights, the six-car train will include Santa’s sleigh, reindeer, the reindeer stable, a miniature village, a gingerbread boxcar, a little red caboose and a newly remodeled elves’ workshop.
Santa will also be on board and visitors will be able to visit with him and his elves and tour the inside of three cars.
Vicksburg is one of 21 stops the KCS’s Holiday Express train will make in seven states. At each stop the KCS Charitable Fund contributes gift cards to the local Salvation Army.
In its 13 years, the project has raised more than $1 million to purchase warm clothing and necessities for children.
When the train rolled into Vicksburg two years ago the Vicksburg Salvation Army received almost $3,000, said Lieutenant Indrani Bhatnagar.
“The KCS does a fundraiser and based on the donations they receive and the size of the community determines how much money we receive,” said Kamace Priest, the president of the Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary.
Priest said the gift cards are used to supplement the needs of the angels left on the Angel Tree.
“We have 180 that are still not adopted,” said Priest.
