Edabeth “Beth” Burris Hovious

Edabeth “Beth” Burris Hovious died Sunday, Jan. 18, 2015, at River Regional Medical Center. She was 91. She was born Edith Elizabeth Franklin on Jan. 27, 1923, in North Carolina. Her parents, Bess and Clinton Franklin later moved to Memphis where she graduated high school at the age of 16. Beth received her Bachelor of Science degree in 1943 from Memphis State College (Memphis State University), with a double major in English and commerce. She was an editor at Waterways Experiment Station and retired in 1986 after 39 years of service. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and sang in the choir for 43 years. She was a member and past president of the Vicksburg Alpha Chapter of Pi Alpha Kappa Sorority. Beth enjoyed playing bridge with her friends in many bridge clubs in Vicksburg. Beth was an enthusiastic cast member of Gold in the Hills, playing the role of “Little Nell” when they performed on the Sprague. She and husband Buddy Burris enjoyed their time as member of the Paddlewheel Square Dancers.

Beth is preceded in death by her parents; and a brother Clinton Franklin; and her husbands, Emmett F. (Buddy) Burris and Earnest Hovious.

She is survived by her stepsons Dr. R.G. (Jerry) Burris (Becky) of Monticello, Steve Burris (Donna) of Vicksburg, Patrick Burris (Jamie) of Lakeland, Fla., and Brian Burris (Joy) of Madison, Ala.; nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Judge Beverly Franklin of Columbus, several nieces and nephews from the Franklin and Hovious Families.

Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2015 at 1:00 pm at Fisher Funeral Home in Vicksburg. Visitation will be from noon until time of the service. Graveside services will be at Hollywood Cemetery in McComb at 3:30 pm the same day.

The family wishes to thank her longtime caregiver, Elizabeth Byrd and the staff of Private Home Care.
