William C. Gaines

William C. “Bill” Gaines died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2015, at Heritage House Retirement Center. He was 85.

Born in Anniston, Ala., Mr. Gaines had lived in Vicksburg since 1967. He retired as chief of the audit office of the Lower Mississippi Valley Corps of Engineers in 1985 and was a member of Bovina United Methodist Church. A past member of the Vicksburg Chapter of the Civitan Club, he was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War.

He received his bachelor’s and master’s of education at the University of Alabama. He began his government career in Huntsville, with the Redstone Arsenal.

He is survived by one daughter, Kathryn E. Gaines of Vicksburg; two sons, Robert M. Gaines (Stacey) of Madison; and William Jeffrey Gaines (Mandi) of Slidell, La..; ex-wife, Faye Marie Kitchens Gaines; two sisters, Eleanor Munsch, of Elgin, S.C., and Cathy Rinehart of Columbus, Ohio; one brother, Dale Deible, also of Columbus; and three grandchildren, Addison Gaines, Aubree Gaines and Bennett Gaines.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Lee Gaines and Hannah Smith Gaines; two sisters, Faye Troxwell and Marie Deible; and one brother, Joe Deible.

Visitation will be at 5-7 p.m. Friday at Riles Funeral Home. A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Rosehill Cemetery in Brookhaven, with Brother John Evans officiating.
