April is full of events

With spring just around the corner, there’s plenty to get ready for in downtown Vicksburg.
A Hit the Bricks shopping event set for March 26 is the first major event of spring to draww people to downtown, leading up to Vicksburg’s biggest party with big name entertainment— Riverfest set for April 17 and 18.
This year at RiverFest will feature Craig Wayne Boyd, winner of Season 7 of the popular NBC vocal contest “The Voice.”
Boyd is the latest in a number of rising stars the RiverFest board has brought to Vicksburg for the annual street festival.
“This year we have the Tip Tops and Silk on Friday night,” event board member Christy Pecanty said. “Saturday night we have Gillis Silo, and Mustang Sally in addition to Boyd.”
This year, the RiverFest festival features an arts and crafts market and a 5k Rhythm Run, Walk and 1 mile fun run.
The next weekend — April 25 — will be another shoppers paradise with the Old Court House Spring Flea Market, again drawing people into historic downtown Vicksburg.
If shopping and crowed at concerts aren’t your cup of tea, there’s plenty of theater performances and films to marvel at.
One of Vicksburg’s many claims to fame opens extends its world record run beginning April 10. Gold in the Hills is as Vicksburg Theatre Guild describes it “fun for the whole family,” and has been for generations. The play initial opened here in 1936, and has been a mainstay since.
If you’ve never see it, or haven’t seen it in a while, it’s certainly worth the price of admission to sing the old songs, cheer for the hero and boo the villain.
Then there’s always the West Side Theatre Foundation who breathed new life into the decaying Strand Theater, and offer a variety of plays and movies. Their schedule for April hasn’t been announced yet, but we’re sure they will be offering some quality films, operas and ballets as they have this month.
This Saturday they will be presented John Boorman’s flim “Queen and County,” followed next week by the Israeli comedy “Cupcakes.” The following Sunday will be a day at the opera with a double feature.
There’s certainly plenty to do in downtown Vicksburg. Just get out and do it.
