Sports complex bill might not be dead … yet

Senate Bill 2926 — a bill aimed at helping fund a proposed sports complex in Vicksburg — has a faint pulse in the Mississippi Senate. State Sen. W. Briggs Hopson III is working to come up with a solution that will work for everyone.

“The prospect for getting something done is not over and I’m trying to work with the Local and Private Committee chairman (Perry Lee, R-Mendenhall), and we’re still talking about it,” Hopson said. “I’ve been working with him the last couple days to keep it alive and the prospect open because I want to see something happen.

“The Local and Private has passed something out and it’s gone to Finance, which is not unusual for any piece of legislation.”

The Senate bill is likely to be reworked a little, similar to House Bill 1655.

The House bill authored by state Reps. Alex Monsour, Oscar Denton and Deborah Butler Dixon would give the City of Vicksburg and Warren County the authority to levy a two percent tax on hotels, motels and restaurants.

Hopson said Wednesday afternoon he is continuing to work on a solution.

“It’s probably going to be tweaked some before anything will come out, if its going to come out at all,” Hopson said. “I’m talking to the chairman to keep it alive or try to work something out that will work for everybody.”
