Poetry reading set for Saturday

A sweet-smelling experiment was done with 100 contemporary American poets with the results recorded in “The Book of Scented Things,” and at 5 p.m. Saturday, Lorelei Books, 1103 Washington St., will offer selected readings from the anthology during its loft reading series.

“Poets Jehanne Dubrow and Lindsay Lusby have arranged to Skype into the event from Chestertown, Md., which is the home of Literary House Press, publisher of “The Book of Scented Things,” owner of Lorelei Books, Laura Weeks said.

“They’ll talk a little about how the book came to be, and read from it each of their own poems,” she said.

Individually selected vials of perfume and fragrances were sent to the poets, Weeks said, and they were then asked to write something in response.

The results, she said, include poetry of longing, childhood memories, poems of place, philosophy and politics and poems about the challenge of writing poems about perfume.

Following the Skype readings and discussion, the program will then be turned over to Caki Wilkerson and Rebecca Morgan Frank, Weeks said.

Wilkerson and Morgan, who are also contributors to the anthology, and who are from Memphis and Hattiesburg respectively, will be on hand to read their poems.

“The icing on the cake for the event is Jackson artist Samara Thomas’ recently created pieces inspired by poems from the book,” Weeks said.

Thomas, originally from Sussex, England works in the mediums of black and white film photography, mixed media ink drawings and large-scale installation sculptures, and her artistic process is directly influenced through recycled materials she uses to form her sculptures.

Most recently Thomas has exhibited in galleries including the H.C. Porter Gallery, in Vicksburg, Belhaven Park, in Jackson and Fort Worth Community Arts Center, in Fort Worth.

“Sam’s art will be on display and available for purchase during the program,” Weeks said.
