Lauren Whitley walked out her brief meeting with New England Patriots corner back Malcolm Butler at Atwood Chevrolet Friday carrying an orange bandanna he signed.

“It was cool,” she said, “He’s the first person I’ve met who’s kind of famous. I was nervous. He signed my bandanna.”

Whitley was among about 30 visitors at Atwood’s showroom on North Frontage Road to meet the hero of Super Bowl XLIX and watch him receive the keys to a new four-door Chevrolet Colorado Z71 pickup given to him by Patriots’ quarterback Tom Brady. Brady gave him the truck, which was initially presented to the quarterback, as a reward for Butler’s game-saving interception in the closing seconds of the game.

Butler walked inside the building to cheers and waved at the crowd before going into an office to sign papers on the truck. He then met with fans to sign autographs and later walked with a group of Atwood employees through the rear of the building, coming out at the service department entrance where he got the truck.

“It feels good man,” he replied when a media representative asked him about getting the truck.

“I’m blessed it happened. I appreciate Tom for doing it. Not too many quarterbacks would do that. I’m glad to have the car. Thank you.”

“I’m glad he came,” Michael Whitley said after meeting Butler. “There were a lot of kids here to see him.

“As a celebrity figure, he should be used to the spotlight by now, making the last second interception in the Super Bowl,” he said. “This being his hometown, he should feel right at home. I’m glad he came so these kids could get a chance to meet him. Some of those kids won’t get a chance like that again.”

Lois Coleman, counselor at Vicksburg High School who was at the school when Butler was a student there, said she came to wish him well.

“I’m just now getting the point where I can approach him personally and tell congratulations and just let him know how proud we are of him and continue to wish him a lot of success,” she said. “We know that he’ll work real hard. He’s done us real proud, both Vicksburg and Vicksburg High School.

“It’s great. As much as I can’t believe it’s happening. I know he’s still pinching himself. He probably has more pinches on him saying ‘is it real?’”
