DOUBLE NO-HITTER: Warren Central pitchers Tristan Lowry, left, and Layne Tedder, right, were selected as USA Today’s All-America Players of the Week following their double no-hitter against Murrah on March 20.

Wherever he goes, it’s not hard to spot Tristan Lowry. The 6-foot-8 Warren Central senior easily fills a doorframe and scrapes the ceiling of whatever room he’s in.

Lately, it isn’t just the people around him who notice Lowry. He’s getting attention on a national stage as well.

Lowry, along with teammate Layne Tedder, were honored as two of USA Today’s All-American performers of the week for their efforts March 20 against Murrah. Tedder threw a no-hitter in the first game of a doubleheader and Lowry threw a perfect game in game two.

“I didn’t find out about it until Coach (Conner) Douglas posted it on Twitter,” Tedder, a senior left-hander, said. “It’s pretty cool. I really didn’t know what it was. I didn’t know they did anything like that.”

Lowry’s perfect game came in his first start and second appearance as a varsity pitcher. He’sd spent the last two seasons on the team but never saw any playing time.

Against Murrah, none of that seemed to matter. He chewed through the Mustangs’ lineup, striking out three batters in a 10-0 win that lasted just five innings because of the mercy rule.

“I was real excited. I was just hoping I could go out there and throw strikes. Mostly I just threw my fastball,” Lowry said. “I didn’t even realize it until the game was over that we’d done that.”

Lowry’s perfect game came after Tedder pitched a three-inning no-hitter that was also shortened by the run rule. Tedder struck out six, but hit one batter and another reached on an error.

“I don’t think any of us realized what was going on until after the fact,” Tedder said. “It was definitely pretty neat, just realizing we did back-to-back on somebody.”

Tedder, who has accepted a non-scholarship offer to play at Hinds Community College next season, has continued to thrive since his no-hitter. He pitched a five-inning complete game in a win over Clinton on March 24 and threw four strong innings a win over Greenville last Tuesday.

Lowry has also done well. He gave up four runs — two earned — in a four-inning stint against Clinton on March 27. Thursday night against Greenville, he walked one batter and gave up five hits in four innings to get the win as the Vikings rolled to an 18-3 victory.

In all, Lowry is 2-0 with a 2.46 ERA and 10 strikeouts in 14 2/3 innings this season. He’s only walked three batters.

Lowry said he feels like his performance this season has solidified his spot in a solid pitching rotation.

“I’d like to think so,” he said. “Hopefully I just throw strikes again and do my job.”
