Arthur Lavonne Gilmore Jr.

Arthur Lavonne “A.L.” Gilmore Jr., 93, of Hattiesburg, died April 8, 2015, at Forrest General Hospital.
Mr. Gilmore began his career as an instructor of physics, chemistry and math, teaching at Picayune High School, Tulane University and Pearl River Community College. He was a retired mathematician and computer specialist with the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers’ Waterways Experiment Station in Vicksburg. He was a veteran having served in the U.S. Army during World War II, was a member and former deacon of Main Street Baptist Church.
Mr. Gilmore was a lifetime member of the USM Alumni Association; proudly telling everyone his card number was 44, Sons of the American Revolution, and the Genealogical Society. He loved computers, discussing politics and reading but most of all spending time with his family and friends, especially his grandchildren whom he truly adored. He was well known for his sense of humor and his story telling ability.
Arthur was preceded in death by his son, Ronald H. Gilmore; parents, Arthur Gilmore, Sr. and Georgia Jordan Gilmore; a sister, Mary George Henderson; and two brothers, Barry Gilmore and Fred Gilmore.
He is survived by his wife, Tommie Lou McCann Gilmore of Hattiesburg; two daughters, Brenda Donahoe (Jeff) of Wiggins and Carol Harper (Vic) of Normal Ill.; daughter-in-law, Patti Gilmore of Madison; two sisters, Colleen Gilmore and Martha Elsbree; five grandchildren, Lindsay, Rob, Katie, Lanie and Rusty; and one great-granddaughter, Lila.
Visitation will be Saturday, April 11, 2015, at Main Street Baptist Church, from 1 p.m. until the service at 3 p.m. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery.
