A community prayer breakfast will headline local events Thursday for the 64th Annual National Day of Prayer.

Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace will be the headline speaker at the event at 7 a.m. at the Bypass Church of Christ Annex, 785 U.S. 61 North.

“It’s an annual event we have to serve as part of the national observance of the Day of Prayer,” said Dr. Willie Nettle, Minister of the Bypass Church of Christ. “We’re just hosting it at our building, but it is a community-wide event.”

Throughout the city, prayer assemblies will be held at Heritage House and Vicksburg Convalescent Home in the morning, and at 12:15 p.m. at Pemberton Plaza, City Hall and Word of Faith Christian Center on Wisconsin Avenue.

Created by a joint resolution of the U.S. Congress and signed into law by President Harry Truman in 1952, the National Day of Prayer is an annual observance held on the first Thursday of May. It is an observance inviting all people to pray for our nation, its leaders, and citizens.

The Theme this year is, “Lord, Hear Our Cry,” and is based on 1 Kings 8:28 where King Solomon asks God, “Hear the cry and the prayer that your servant is praying in your presence this day.”

Each site will have a wooden sign directing people to the exact location for them to meet.

All of these events have been planned by the Vicksburg Warren County National Day of Prayer Planning Committee, which is chaired Nettle.

Due to the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ, God lovingly listens to our prayers,” Nettle said. “We can do nothing more important than pray for our nation and our world, humbly asking for God’s healing, leading, and protection.”
