JACKSON — Joseph Pierce Walker Sr. died Monday May 4, 2015, in Hazlehurst. He was 90.
Mr. Walker was born Feb. 17, 1925, in Drew and was an Army Air Corps pilot. He graduated from Ole Miss, where he lettered in basketball and track, with a bachelor’s and a master’s in education.
He coached at French Camp and Utica, and was principal at Utica and Forest Hill. He was also headmaster at Copiah Academy, and taught at Mississippi College and Milsaps University. He was a member of the Mississippi Coaches Hall of Fame, a member of Live Oaks Golf Club, and was a Baptist deacon.
Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Delora Walker of Jackson; two sons, Joe Walker Jr. of Louisville, Ky., and David B. Walker of Jackson; two sisters, Nanette Shaw of Indianapolis and Shirley Smith of Murfreesboro,Tenn.; three grandsons; one great-grandson; and one great-granddaughter.
Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Raymond Road Baptist Church with services at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 9, 2015, at Raymond Road Baptist Church with Brother Wilber Irwin and the Rev. Jonathan Russell Officiating.
Pallbearers will be Billy Newman, Brian Fisher, Larry Boyd, David Glascow, Doug Womack, and Lamar Currie.
