Warren Central didn’t have a lot of chances to shine at the Class 6A state track meet, but did bring home a shiny medal.
The boys 4×200 meter relay team of DeEdrick Wilson, Joe’Vantae Shorter, Lawrence Lewis and Nick Caldwell finished second Saturday to cap a strong season.
The same relay team set the school record at last week’s North State meet with a time of 1 minute, 28.88 seconds. Saturday’s time of 1:28.95 was about a tenth of a second away from breaking it again.
Olive Branch won the race with a time of 1:28.29.
Olive Branch also won the Class 6A team championship with 65 points. Clinton was second, with 58 points, Madison Central was third with 55 and Hattiesburg fourth with 51.
The silver medal in the relay helped salvage an otherwise mediocre day for Warren Central’s track team.
The boys 4×100 relay, which consisted of the same runners as the 4×200, false-started and was disqualified.
The two relay teams were the only entrants for WC in the boys’ meet.
In the girls’ meet, freshman Raven Thompson finished fourth in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 2 inches, and was seventh in the triple jump with a leap of 34 feet, 7 3/4 inches.
The 4×100 meter relay team also medaled, finishing third with a time of 49.22 seconds. Clinton won the race in 47.75 seconds, and Ocean Springs was second in 48.29.
Clinton won eight of the meet’s 17 events and the team championship by scoring 101 points. Starkville was a distant second, with 75 points, and Meridian third with 66.
