Up to 10 local students will be working for the city of Vicksburg this summer under a federally sponsored program administered through the Mississippi Department of Transportation.
The Board of Mayor and Aldermen learned Friday the city for the second consecutive year will receive a $35,000 Federal Highway Administration to participate in MDOT’s Urban Youth Corps Program. The money will allow the city to hire 10 people.
“This is a six-week summer program for youth ages 16-25,” city grants coordinator Marcia Weaver said. “It will run from June 8 through July 17 — six weeks.”
The Urban Youth Corps Program provides jobs for local youth and holds weekly classes in life skills, teaching them the importance of good credit, how to open a checking account, job application and interview skills, and personal safety.
South Ward Alderman Willis Thompson said after the meeting the group will be doing rehabilitation and landscaping projects at five parks in the city. Youth Corps workers last year painted the wrought iron fence at Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Weaver said applications for the program will be available at the city’s human resources office in the City Hall Annex, 1405 Walnut St., and must be turned in by 3 p.m. May 22.
In other action, the board:
• Took under advisement a bid from Harcross Chemical Inc. of Vicksburg for water treatment chemicals. The bid was by line item.
• Approved a $235,614.85 bid by Killen Contractors of Vicksburg to install generators at the city’s sewer pumping stations.
• Authorized Mayor George Flaggs Jr. to execute two Mississippi Landmark permits from the Mississippi Department of Archives and History to replace the roof and a window at the Central Fire Station on Walnut Street. The fire station is on the National Register of Historic Buildings and a state landmark site.
• Adopted a resolution declaring the weapon of officer Gordon Clay Griffin surplus authorizing its sale to him.
• Signed an addendum totaling $24,859.75 to the contract with JH&H Architect to reroof the Vicksburg Convention Center. The architects are examining the building’s roof for potential problems. The addition to the contract allows them to check the building for other problems.
