The Vicksburg Post recently added a new reporter to its staff.
Alexander Swatson has joined The Post after recently graduating from the University of Alabama.
He comes from a family with a military background and knows discipline, respect and integrity. Swatson’s childhood fostered an environment where he was encouraged to be creative and serve his community.
“It is important for us, when looking for people to join our team, to find those who exhibit these traits,” Post managing editor Paul Barry said. “Not only does Alex have these, but also he has a passion for sports and the role they play in shaping a community. That is a fantastic combination.”
From Germany, he moved to Washington D.C., Texas and North Carolina. Swatson participated in baseball, football and basketball while living in Texas.
Reading and analyzing sports and technology are Swatson’s favorite hobbies. Electronics, computers and wondering how machines worked always fascinated him. He studied computer programming and web design in high school and later in college.
He developed a love for sports while living in San Antonio and he discovered the Duke Blue Devils men’s basketball team in 2003, and has been a fan ever since. He said the class the team displays and their winning attitude is what attracted him to the team.
“Alex has a great attitude and the desire to serve the community, two things we are looking for in a reporter,” Barry said.
His favorite teams include the San Antonio Spurs, Duke Blue Devils men’s basketball team, Alabama Crimson Tide football team and the Green Bay Packers.
Swatson graduated from the University of Alabama in May 2015 with a degree in journalism with a concentration of sports news and information. He was involved in his local community while at Alabama. Swatson mentored elementary school kids and worked with freshman as they transitioned to college.
“No one should be afraid to go to school or be overwhelmed when entering college, so I strived to be the one friendly face to help ease those pains,” Swatson said.
