There’s nothing to do in Vicksburg

There’s nothing to do in Vicksburg, I thought to myself Tuesday as I laced up my shoes before running out the door to go to trivia at Martin’s at Midtown.
Then the next night I had the same thought as I made the last minute decision to take advantage of Ameristar Casino’s free comedy night.
Another night I walked down to KJ’s River Towne Grille for a few rounds of Ballistic Bingo, contemplating what on Earth there was to do in Vicksburg.
By Friday night, my fiancée was dragging me to Monsour’s at the Biscuit Company for karaoke, where I learned as little as I make at my day job, I need to stick with it.
My parents drove over to visit me, despite my knowing the obvious — there’s nothing to do in Vicksburg — and we spent the better part of the day at the Vicksburg National Military Park.
We drove by the Vicksburg Riverfront Murals and through Cedar Hill Cemetery and Soldiers Rest.
I took them to Highway 61 Coffeehouse and showed them what I wanted for my birthday in the Attic Gallery upstairs, other than a place to live with stuff to do.
Mary Ann Peoples at Vicksburg Junior High School invited me to tag along on a downtown walking tour with her students. The field trip included stops at the Jacqueline House, the Old Courthouse Museum and the Coca Cola Museum.
I’m sure the kids on that field trip knew what I meant when I said there’s nothing to do in Vicksburg, just like the high schoolers I met on a field trip at the Lower Mississippi River Museum.
I’m not sure when it actually hit me — was it when I was watching Westside Theatre Foundation’s production of “Ghost of a Chance” at the Strand Theatre or was it when I got to see the United Way’s Dancing with the Vicksburg Stars at Lady Luck Casino?
Maybe the better question is was it when I was looking at my planner or my bank statement?
Regardless, I noticed I not only haven’t been bored in Vicksburg, but I’ve been flat out busy.
Every time I turn around there’s another 5k or festival or play being put on, which has led to me paying rent on an apartment at which I only sleep and shower.
Yet, I’ve heard from people since I got here there’s nothing to do in Vicksburg.
This may not be New York City, but I still find myself having trouble keeping up at times.
It’s time to take your blinders off, and maybe you’ll see: there’s plenty to do in Vicksburg.
