Mayor withdraws plan to change city government

Vicksburg Mayor George Flaggs Jr. said he is withdrawing his proposed amendments to the city’s charter, saying he does not have the support of either North Ward Alderman Michael Mayfield of South Ward Alderman Willis Thompson.

The change to the city’s charter would have given the mayor’s seat more authority over city business and change some of the appointment powers reserved by the mayor and aldermen.

Flaggs announced his decision near the close of a Board of Mayor and Aldermen work session Monday.

Mayfield and Thompson objected to the mayor’s proposal assigning department head appointments, which had Flaggs appointing the fire and police chiefs, city clerk, city attorney and the city finance director.

Mayfield accused Flaggs of power grabbing and trying to be a dictator.

Mayfield later stepped away from his seat on the board and walked out of the meeting before it adjourned.
