Despite having one of the highest temperatures of the year, Monday signaled the end of summer break for students attending schools at the Vicksburg Warren School District and Porters Chapel Academy.
VWSD Superintendent Chad Shealy spent the day traveling around the county.
“The first day went eerily well,” he said. “We visited every single building.”
Shealy began his day at Redwood Elementary School moving from school to school covering all 16 schools in the district before the buses arrived.
“We worked through some of the new transition,” he said. “There were everyday issues like ‘which bus do I get on,’ or a minor schedule change here and there, but overall the day went well.”
Shealy said he was pleased with the way things went overall.
“Everything was under control,” he said. “Kids were all doing what they were supposed to be doing.”
VWSD also provided water to all students riding buses Monday afternoon.
“We got three days of the heat advisory with it being 105 or 107,” he said. “It didn’t get as hot as they had projected, but we just wanted to make sure the students who were riding the bus stayed hydrated.”
PCA Headmaster Pam Wilbanks said the first day of school at PCA finished without any major hiccups.
“It really was very calm, very uneventful,” she said. “I think we got off to a very positive start.”
For Wilbanks and several students the first day didn’t end with the final bell, but after a softball game Monday evening.
Wilbanks said the academic part of the day went really well and at the time of interview, PCA was winning the softball game.
“We are very excited about the new school year and looking forward to academic success,” she said.
Wilbanks said some improvements done to the school during the summer were appreciated on the first day.
“In different areas of the school we have been working on the air and the ducting system,” she said. “We are very blessed all the air conditioning worked today.”
