Tallulah coach looking ahead, not backward

Tallulah Academy is, seemingly, sitting pretty with a 2-0 record and a talented team ready to make a championship push.
Coach Bo Barton, however, is looking at the schedule ahead and not at what his team has already accomplished.
The Trojans host Tensas Academy (1-1) tonight in the District 4-A opener for both teams. It’s the first of five district games on the schedule, most of which are against teams that have had a lot of recent postseason success. With a game against a strong Christian Collegiate team thrown in, Barton said things are about to get a lot more difficult than they’ve been the first two weeks.
“We’ve scored a lot of points, but we’ve given up a lot of points, and the level of competition is going to be better before long,” Barton said. “Tensas has won state championships. Franklin played for one a couple of years ago. Sharkey’s won two. This district is loaded. The two teams we’ve beaten, you can’t gauge our team based on them. I’m basing us off the district games we have to play.”
Delta Streets at SIA
Sharkey-Issaquena Academy figured to be a team powered by a big line and a strong running game, and so far this season that’s proven true.
In three games — including a loss to Marvell Academy in which it was held to 11 yards — SIA has run for 734 yards. It had 328 in a 44-20 win over Central Academy last week.
The Confederates (2-1) should add to their impressive total tonight against Delta Streets Academy, which has lost 10 of 11 games since joining the MAIS in 2014. Delta Streets has allowed at least 40 points in nine of those 11 games.
River Oaks at Central Hinds
Central Hinds routed Porters Chapel Academy 43-13 last week to improve to 3-0 and match its win total from both 2013 and 2014. The Cougars might have a chance to pick off a few more wins, as well, before reaching the back half of the schedule. Only one of their next three opponents has a winning record.
Terry at Port Gibson
Port Gibson routed Class 5A Lanier last week, 36-0, to snap a 16-game losing streak. The Blue Waves hadn’t won since beating Hollandale Simmons in the 2013 season opener.
This week, Port Gibson (1-2) will have a tougher test against Terry (2-1), which is averaging 247 rushing yards per game.
Montgomery at Madison
For the first time in a decade, and only the second time ever, Madison Parish is 1-0. The Jaguars beat General Trass 36-14 last week to win their first season opener since 2005, which was also the first year the school was open. The 36 points was the second-most Madison has ever scored in an opener.
