Alcorn cruises past Alabama State

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — John Gibbs, Jr. passed for a touchdown and ran for another and Darryan Ragsdale ran for two more Saturday to help Alcorn State beat Alabama State 31-14.

Gibbs completed 26 of 33 passes for 305 yards, including a 62-yard TD to Tollette George. Gibbs had 14 carries for 40 yards, with a 3-yard TD run that tied the game at 14.

Alabama State (0-2) outgained the Braves on the ground 109 yards to 86 in the first half, with Ellis Richardson scoring on a 37-yard run and Khalid Thomas on a 7-yarder.

But after Haiden McCraney’s 29-yard field goal put Alcorn State (1-1) up 17-14 at halftime, the Braves pulled away with an improved ground game, finishing with 155 yards rushing.

Ragsdale gained 50 yards on 10 carries, scoring on a 7-yard run in the first quarter and a 25-yard run in the third.

Alcorn will play its home opener next Saturday at 4 p.m. against in-state rival Mississippi Valley State.

North Alabama 34, Miss. College 17

Lamon Thompson ran for 188 yards and two touchdowns, Luke Wingo threw a pair of touchdown passes, and North Alabama beat Mississippi College.

MC quarterback Kyle Smith threw two touchdown passes to Marcel Newson, who finished with eight receptions for 133 yards.

M.H.-Baylor 65, Millsaps 12

Mary Hardin-Baylor rolled up 605 yards of total offense, including 363 on the ground, to rout Millsaps. Five players scored a rushing touchdown for Mary Hardin-Baylor, which did not have a runner gain more than 55 yards.

Chance Clowers threw two touchdown passes for Millsaps, which only only had 153 yards of total offense.

Wisc.-Whitewater 62, Belhaven 6

Jordan Ratliffe and Nick Patterson each scored two rushing touchdowns in the first half as Division III powerhouse Wisconsin-Whitewater routed Belhaven Saturday in Jackson.

Wisconsin-Whitewater, which has won six Division III national championships since 2007, had 302 rushing yards as a team and held Belhaven to 19. Ratliffe finished with 103 yards.

Delta State 51, TAMU-Commerce 44

Tyler Sullivan completed 34 of 56 passes for 491 yards and three touchdowns, including two in the last 3:36, to lead Delta State to a come-from-behind win over Texas A&M-Commerce.

Sullivan’s 32-yard TD pass to Jarvis York tied the game at 44 with 3:36 left. He then led the Statesmen down the field in the final minutes and connected with Collin Floyd on a 23-yard TD with 1:09 left to win it.

Tennessee State 35, Jackson State 25

O’Shay Ackerman-Carter threw three touchdown passes and ran for two more to lead Tennessee State past Jackson State.

LaMontiez Ivy completed 24 of 39 passes for 322 yards and two touchdowns for Jackson State.
