After a season-opening loss to Wayne County, Warren Central has worked to get the taste of losing out its mouth. The Vikings (4-1, 1-0 Region 2-6A) are on a four-game winning streak and earned their first region win last week against Northwest Rankin.
Friday, Greenville (0-6, 0-1) rolls into Viking Stadium looking to shake up their momentum. Vikings coach Josh Morgan has a long history playing the Hornets, but his team’s main focus is keeping its momentum flowing and improving to 2-0 in region play.
The Vikings have gotten their last three wins by an average of three touchdowns.
“I think we’ve gotten better every week. I think we’re fixing a lot of the mistakes we made early on. We’re running the ball a lot better than we have run earlier in the year and we’re playing better defense. If you put that all together that’s where our success has come from,” Morgan said.
The remaining games on the Vikings’ schedule are against Region 2-6A opponents, and the schedule gets a lot tougher next week. After Greenville, three of the Vikings’ four October games are against Madison Central, Clinton and Starkville.
Starkville (4-1) is ranked No. 2 in this week’s Associated Press Class 6A poll, and Clinton (3-2) is fourth. Madison Central got as high as second before losing three straight games to No. 1 South Panola, Louisiana powerhouse West Monroe, and Clinton.
Morgan said his team has done a good job of putting last week’s game against Northwest Rankin behind them and getting ready for a Greenville team that has yet to win a game.
“You can’t get caught up looking ahead or behind,” Morgan said. “You got to keep moving and keep growing. Our guys understand that. You have to have tunnel vision, stay in the locker room and stay with each other and stay positive. It’s been good for us and worked out well for us.”
Morgan said this Greenville team is a typical athletics Greenville team.
There’s been an emphasis on playing clean football against the Hornets, such as taking care of the football and making smart decisions.
Any team with a quarterback who can throw the ball down field to guys on the edge that can go get it makes them a dangerous opponent. Morgan said the biggest thing they’ve talked about is playing the best they can play and not beating themselves.
“They’ve got a lot of athletes, very explosive and a lot of speed. They’re going to be dangerous and we’ve got to do a good job of being careful with the football and containing them on defense,” Morgan said.
