Southern Miss takes down UTSA

HATTIESBURG (AP) — Jalen Richard and Ito Smith both rushed for over 100 yards, DJ Thompson and Michael Thomas went over 100 receiving, and Southern Miss nearly tripled Texas San Antonio’s offensive output in a 32-10 win Saturday night.

Southern Miss (4-3, 2-1 Conference USA) had 556 yards to UTSA’s 205, and the Golden Eagles possessed the ball more than 35 minutes.

Thomas scored on a 47-yard pass from Nick Mullens on Southern Miss’ first possession. Stephen Brauchle hit three field goals in the second quarter to make it a 16-0 halftime lead. Mullens finished 23-of-31 for 343 yards with two scores and three interceptions.

Kerry Thomas Jr.’s 1-yard TD catch put UTSA (1-6, 1-2) on the board midway through the third quarter. Daniel Portillo kicked a 30-yard field goal to pull the Roadrunners within two scores, but Richard’s one-yard plunge in the fourth quarter put it out of reach.

Alabama A&M 28, Jackson St. 22

Harvey Harris ran for a touchdown late in the fourth quarter to lift Alabama A&M over Jackson State.

Harris’ game-winning 3-yard scoring run came with the Bulldogs (2-4, 2-2 Southwestern Athletic Conference) trailing 22-20.

Damion May, who started in place of the injured De’Angelo Ballard, passed for two touchdowns and Octavious Miles scored on a 99-yard kickoff return.

After leading 13-12 at the break, the Bulldogs fell behind 19-13 midway through the third quarter when JSU’s Jarius Moore scored on a 4-yard run.

May found Jonathan Dorsey for an 18-yard TD in the fourth quarter to put the Bulldogs back on top, 20-19. Jackson State’s Ryan Deising kicked a field goal with three minutes to go to give the Tigers (1-5, 1-3) a 22-20 edge.

Belhaven 42, Warner 33

Clayton Webb threw four touchdown passes in the second half to lead Belhaven to a come-from-behind win over Warner University on Saturday. Webb was just 12-of-30 passing for 164 yards, but the Blazers (1-6) outscored Warner (2-5) 28-9 in the second half after trailing by 10 points at halftime.

Birmingham Southern 35, Millsaps 18

Samir Usman ran for 130 yards and a touchdown, Austin Martin threw two TD passes, and Birmingham Southern beat Millsaps 35-18 on Saturday. Millsaps (1-5) had 402 passing yards, but just 21 rushing yards and lost its fifth consecutive game. The Majors have allowed at least 31 points in all five losses.
