John Amos “Big John” Murphy

Funeral services for John Amos “Big John” Murphy will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7. 2015, at Gospel Temple M. B. Church with the Rev. Walter Edley officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery with W. H. Jefferson Funeral Home in charge.
Mr. Murphy died Friday, Oct. 30, 2015, at University of Mississippi Medical Center. He was 61.
He was a retired carpenter for the Grand Gulf Nuclear Power Plant/ Bechtel Corp. He was a 1974 graduate of North Vicksburg High School and a graduate of Hinds Community College, and was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing. He was the secretary for Gospel Temple M. B. Church and a member of the United Carpenters Union Local No. 5.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Willie Lee Murphy; his sisters, Paulette Harmon; and maternal grandparents, Lizzie Bright and Vince Harmon, and Linda Crawford
Survivors include his son, Jonathan Lee Murphy Sr. of Vicksburg; daughter, LaShounda Crawford of Bedford, Texas; mother, Willie Mae Harmon Murphy of Vicksburg; three brothers, James C. Harmon, Houston Harmon of Chicago and the Rev. Manny Murphy of Vicksburg; sister, Betty Murphy Draper of Vicksburg; two grandchildren; and nieces, nephews, cousins and other family and friends.
