As the season has progressed, Alcorn State has found more and more ways to get the football to Marquis Warford. It hasn’t gone unnoticed.
The redshirt junior wide receiver from San Antonio, Texas, was named the Southwestern Athletic Conference Newcomer of the Year on Wednesday. He’s accounted for eight touchdowns, is Alcorn’s leading receiver, and has more than 1,100 combined yards rushing, receiving and in kick returns.
Warford has 32 receptions for 418 yards and two touchdowns. He also has five rushing TDs, and returned a kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown in last week’s 14-10 win over Jackson State.
Warford was one of 10 Alcorn State players to receive all-conference recognition.
Making first-team All-SWAC were offensive linemen Isekelli Ongosia and Detonio Dade; tight end Jordan Payne; defensive linemen Stacey Garner and Darien Moody; linebacker Damon Watkins; and defensive back Warren Gatewood.
Running back Darryan Ragsdale, linebacker Darien Anderson and punter Haiden McCraney were on the second team.
Jackson State wide receiver Daniel Williams, defensive lineman Javancy Jones and kicker Ryan Deising, and Mississippi Valley State defensive back Marquis Green also earned first-team honors.
The Offensive Player of the Year was Grambling quarterback Johnathan Williams.
Grambling’s Broderick Fobbs earned Coach of the Year honors after leading the Tigers to a 9-0 record in conference play and the West Division title. They’ll play Alcorn in the SWAC championship game Saturday afternoon in Houston.
Alabama State linebacker Kourtney Berry was the Defensive Player of the Year, and Texas Southern quarterback Averion Hurts was the Freshman of the Year.
