Insanity an addictive workout that tests limits

Up-tempo music and encouragement filled Wyatt’s Gym’s exercise room Tuesday morning for the insanity workout taught by Bea Willis.

The insanity workout is a program by the Beachbody LLC made popular by Shaun T and Willis uses a couple of moves from the program in her classes. Willis chose to use a lot of those moves because of their high intensity. She incorporated a mixture of jumping rope for the warm up, step aerobics, mountain climbers and tricep dips on the step apparatus, and a soothing cool down in the dark at the end.

“You do a lot of work in just a few seconds. You work hard for a short period of time and then you rest for a short period time, that’s called interval training,” Willis said.

Willis also uses a method known as muscle confusion, which gives the body an all over workout instead of doing strictly cardio or weight training. Willis said with muscle confusion, your body is constantly changing with little rest and is more effective.

To help motivate her class, Willis has a motto of “We don’t quit, we finish.”

“As adults, we do that in here,” Willis said. “I push them past their limits and then they see it can be done. So the entire class encourages everyone else not to quit and that’s how they achieve their goals.”

Participants in Willis’ class are excited to be apart of her “Bea hive” and have developed a family in and outside of the gym. Willis gives them motivation and inspiration when working out.

“Everything is for you, it’s not for your family,” said Lety Garcia after finishing the class.

The class has taken away the loneliness of exercising alone for Shereada Manuel. Through the class she’s met Garcia, Janetta Curtis, Connie Linzy and Courtney Reed, – owner of Vicks fitness off Washington Street – and together they’ve participated in several endurance races such as The Color Run and Bricks and Spokes bicycle ride.

Linzy came to an Insanity class four years ago and feels like she’s become addicted to the workout and environment.

“I feel like I have to be here and if I’m not here I feel like I’m missing something,” Linzy said. “These ladies have become a part of my extended family and we are close.”

After the work the group said they feel amazing and Curtis called it a natural high.

“What it does is, it gives you energy, gives your clarity,” Manuel said. “It takes away a lot of the nervousness and that stress you get in your day-to-day life, you work it out right here.”

Willis teaches another high intensity class on Monday at 4:30 p.m. and another class only for women. If someone is unable to make the evening classes, she instructs the insanity classes Tuesday and Wednesday mornings at 9 a.m. at Wyatt’s Gym.
