Warren Central’s Galvin gears up for All-Star Game

When Byron Galvin showed up to Warren Central’s fieldhouse for a normal afternoon workout, he wasn’t expecting the news.

The hard-hitting senior safety had another game to play.

A roster shuffle took Galvin off the alternate list and put him on the main roster for the Bernard Blackwell Mississippi All-Star Game Saturday in Gulfport. A player dropped out of last weekend’s Mississippi-Alabama All-Star Game, and when a replacement was plucked off the Bernard Blackwell roster Galvin was added as a replacement.

“It’s great. I feel good. I can’t wait. I always felt like I played good. I’m going to go there and try to start,” Galvin said. “When he told me, I was ready to play now. I’ve been ready since he told me.”

Although Galvin wasn’t initially on the all-star roster, he’s been a key part of a top-notch defense at Warren Central for three seasons. He’s been a starter for the past two years, and saw significant playing time as a sophomore.

This season, Galvin had 61 total tackles, nine tackles for loss, two sacks and two interceptions. He had 68 tackles, including 51 solos, in 2014.

“He’s probably been our hardest hitter, and really one of the leaders the last two years on a really good defense,” Warren Central coach Josh Morgan said. “He can play the run, and he can play the pass. He’s a hybrid type that can do both things really well, and that puts you in another category.”

As important as Galvin’s physical ability, Morgan added, was his intelligence on the field. Warren Central uses its strong safety both in run support and coverage, meaning the people who play the position need to be alert and react to what’s happening as the play unfolds.

Morgan said Galvin learned the ropes early on, and then stepped into a role as one of the quarterbacks of the defense as his career went on. It also allows him to be in the right position to make plays.

“He really did good his sophomore year of learning. You’ve got to be sharp, do your film study, and know what your reads are. He’s done all of that and become a force to be reckoned with. He’s our Superman of the defense,” Morgan said. “He can change the game with a big hit. He’s a momentum shifter.”

Galvin said he’s gotten offers or interest from most of Mississippi’s junior colleges. A strong showing in the all-star game might raise his profile a bit, or at least help seal the deal with his top choices.

“I’ve gotten offers from East Mississippi, Southwest (Mississippi), Co-Lin, Northwest (Mississippi), all of those. Right now I’m thinking East, because they expect me to come in and earn a starting spot. I like coaches that push me a lot,” Galvin said. “I think I can get looked at a lot more if I play well.”
