Seasoned duo take on Miss Miss. pageant

Published 12:00 am Sunday, February 28, 2016

Jaynie Fedell and Taylor Thomas Hosemann are not new to producing and choreographing a pageant.

Both have worked with the Miss Mississippi’s Outstanding Teen Pageant — Fedell from its beginning 11 years ago and Thomas for the past two years — and have proven that they are capable of pulling off a successful show.

It is their experience and successes that made it easy for the Miss Mississippi Pageant board to select the duo to do the same for the Miss Mississippi Pageant.

The pair will continue to produce and choreograph the teen pageant, which is scheduled to run just three weeks before the Miss Mississippi Pageant.

“I think this is going to be a great show, both with the teen and the miss show,” said Winky Freeman, executive director for the Miss Mississippi’s Outstanding Teen Pageant.

“Jaynie Fedell has got more production experience than any volunteer with our organization.”

Because of work and family obligations, the former producer, Amy Jackson and choreographer, Chesley Sadler Lambiotte, had to step down from their positions, Freeman said.

Even though Freeman said Fedell and Hosemann are biting into “a big piece of pie” taking on both pageants, he felt confident the women could do it.

“They have proven themselves in the past.”

Fedell, who has also been involved as a volunteer with the Miss Mississippi Pageant in the past, said she is very honored and excited to have the opportunity to be the producer for both pageants and feels the key to doing a good job will be organization.

“I will work on one pageant and get things done there and then work on the other pageant and get things done there,” Fedell said.

Initially, Fedell admits she had some reservations to being the producer for both the Miss Mississippi Pageant and the Mississippi’s Outstanding Teen Pageant, but after a good night sleep, her hesitations were resolved.

“The day I knew I had this job I went to bed thinking to myself, what have I done, what am I getting myself into, but the next morning I woke up and said, ‘this is how it’s going to be done and I went to it.’ ”

Though producing both pageants will be a big undertaking for Fedell, she will not be doing it all alone, Freeman said.

“It’s not a one-person operation. Jaynie realizes no matter how well she can do something you have to have some branch management going on,” he said.

“I am as good as those around me,” Fedell said.

Hosemann, a Vicksburg native, who now teaches dance at Dancer’s Pointe and directs Studio 2 Dance Ensemble, both in New Orleans, said, “She (Fedell) is great at putting it in your hands,” implying Fedell will talk to her about an idea for the production and will then give her the creative freedom to run with the idea.

“Taylor and I have developed a way we like to do things,” Fedell said, adding both of their goals are to put on a show the audience and contestants will enjoy.

Some changes in the productions can be expected, Fedell said, which will bring both the Miss Mississippi Pageant and Miss Mississippi’s Outstanding Teen Pageant more in-line with the respective national competitions.

The mistress of ceremony for the Miss Mississippi Pageant will be 2006 Miss Mississippi Taryn Foshee, who was third runner-up to 2007 Miss America.

For the Miss Mississippi’s Outstanding Teen Pageant, the mistresses of ceremony will be 2016 Miss Mississippi Hannah Roberts and 2008 Miss Mississippi’s Outstanding Teen Morgan Burnett.

Preliminary competitions for the Miss Mississippi’s Outstanding Teen Pageant will be held June 2-3 and tickets are $25 for each night. The final round of competition and crowning will be held on June 4 and tickets are $40. All competitions will begin at 8 p.m. at the Vicksburg Auditorium, 901 Monroe St.

Preliminary competitions for the Miss Mississippi Pageant will be held June 22-24 and tickets are $30 for Wednesday and Thursday’s competitions and $40 for Friday. The final round of competition and crowning will be held on June 25 and tickets are $50. All competitions will begin at 8 p.m. at Vicksburg Convention Center, 1600 Mulberry St.
