For those looking for entertainment, Vicksburg was the place to be this week.
Beginning on Thursday night, Warren Central High School presented its annual school musical. More than 100 students along with teachers and members of the community worked together on their production of “The Little Mermaid,” which ran through Saturday. From making costumes to aiding in the construction of the sets, WCHS choral director Nancy Robertson said parents, teachers, school secretaries and people from the little theater have all pitched in.
“The support from the community has been insane,” senior cast member Caitlyn Jeffers said.
The Southern Cultural Heritage Foundation held its final night of the “Raise the Roof” talent search and competition on Saturday, and Bowmar Avenue Elementary School student, Marcus Randle walked away with the $1,000 grand prize. Marcus was one of seven people who competed from four talent divisions after last weekend’s preliminary competitions.
Affairs of the Heart 6, a fundraiser for the Salvation Army’s Women’s Auxiliary and the Good Shepherd Center was also held throughout the weekend at the Parkside Play house. The annual event featured local entertainment including dancers and vocalist.
The Strand Theatre had a screening of “Mustang” Saturday evening. The film, which was directed by Deniz Gamze Erguven, was nominated as an Academy Award nominee for Best Foreign Language film.
The local branch of Alcorn State University hosted an Improving Literacy Through Family and Community Partnerships on Friday.
The workshop, which was presented by a subcontractor from the Regional Educational Laboratory Southeast at Florida State University Dr. Archie Hill, was offered after faith leaders from the community wanted to know how they could become involved as part of the literacy solution.
“One of the most exciting things I have done in a long time was sit in this very room and work with about 15 ministers brought together by Dr. Ethel Lassiter, who had the idea of bringing clergy leaders together,” said Dr. Chris Gilmer, executive director of the ASU Vicksburg Campus.
