Ole Miss didn’t need any late-inning magic this time. It got its big comeback out of the way early.

The Rebels scored seven runs in the third inning Wednesday night to wipe out a six-run deficit, and hung on to beat Memphis 9-7 at Swayze Field.

Ole Miss improved to 7-1 on the season, with four of its wins coming by one or two runs including one walk-off.

“We’ve been able to put big innings together. Good offenses do that,” Ole Miss coach Mike Bianco said. “When we’ve had the opportunities this season, we’ve scored multiple runs in an inning.”

J.B. Woodman went 2-for-3 with three RBIs for the Rebels, who scored five runs with the bases loaded. Woodman drove in two runs with a single in the sixth inning, and another in the third.

Ole Miss used a bases-loaded walk, an error and a wild pitch to score four runs during its big rally. Holt Perdzock had Connor Cloyd also had RBI singles.

Ole Miss only had five hits in the game. Memphis’ pitchers walked eight batters and threw four wild pitches.

Memphis (4-3) jumped out to a 6-0 lead after 2 1/2 innings.

Jake Little hit a three-run home run in the top of the second inning. In the third, Andy Bowman delivered an RBI double and later scored on a wild pitch. Little, who had reached on a walk, then scored on a base hit by Jake Overbey.

After that early flourish, however, the Ole Miss bullpen put the Tigers on lockdown.

Andy Pagnozzi (2-0) allowed one run in 3 2/3 innings to stop the bleeding. Conor Green, Brady Feigl and Will Stokes followed with three innings of shutout ball. In all, the relievers allowed one run on five hits in 6 2/3 innings. They walked three and struck out five.

The only run Memphis scored after the third inning was on a solo home run by Chris Carrier with two outs in the top of the ninth. Stokes then got Bowman to foul out to end the game and earn his first save of the season.

Little finished the game 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored for Memphis. Bowman and Carrier each had two hits and scored twice.

South Alabama 4, Southern Miss 2

Southern Miss’ trip to the coast was anything but a fun time.

Harrison Spruiell held the Golden Eagles to one run over seven-plus innings as South Alabama won Wednesday night in Biloxi to complete a sweep of their two-game midweek series.

After scoring at least six runs in each of its first seven games, Southern Miss scored a total of five in taking its first two losses of the season.

Southern Miss starter Hunter Stevens (0-1) allowed four runs in 2 2/3 innings and took the loss. He gave up a solo home run to Ben Gann in the second inning and three more runs in the third before he was pulled.

Nick Sandlin and Cody Livingston combined to throw 6 1/3 innings of shutout relief for the Golden Eagles, but the bats never came around to get them back in the game.

Chase Scott went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored and Tim Lynch was 3-for-4 with an RBI, but the rest of the USM lineup only had three hits.

Spruiell (1-0) allowed four hits and one walk in 6 2/3 innings. He struck out five.
