Round one of the Warren Central-Vicksburg softball rivalry went to Warren Central.
The Lady Vikes scored four runs in the fourth inning — all with two outs — to take the lead for good, and went on to beat their crosstown rival 6-2 Saturday in the final game of the Lady Vikes Invitational.
Brooke Patterson went 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI for Warren Central, and also pitched a solid game. She went all six innings, allowed two hits and two walks, and struck out 12.
Vicksburg jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a couple of unearned runs. Kayla Foster doubled and scored a run in the third inning. Warren Central finally got going in the bottom of the fourth, however.
With two outs and no one on, Cocoa Fultz was hit by a pitch and April Lynn reached on an error. Madison Wade followed with a two-run triple to tie the game, then scored the go-ahead run on a single by Kaitlynn Mitchell.
Patterson added an RBI single to make it 4-2, and the Lady Vikes padded the lead with two more runs in the fifth. The game ended after six innings because of a 75-minute time limit imposed for the tournament.
The victory capped off a solid day for the Lady Vikes. They won two of their three games in the tournament, beating Terry 10-1 and losing to Pearl 9-3.
In the win over Terry, Ashley Coley was 2-for-3 with a triple, RBI and two runs scored while Morgan Stewart went 2-for-2 with a triple and two runs scored. Wade, Patterson and Megan Stewart all had RBI singles.
In the loss to Pearl, Sarah Kate Smith tripled and scored a run, while Lynn had a double and an RBI. Pearl scored seven runs in the fifth inning to surge ahead and won easily.
Vicksburg only won one of its three games. It lost to Warren Central and to Pearl, 7-0, but beat Terry 4-2 in its first game of the day.
The Missy Gators only had one hit against Terry, but took advantage of eight walks to get runners on and move them around the bases. They scored three runs in the third inning and Foster hit a sacrifice fly.
Warren Central and Vicksburg will meet again March 17 at Vicksburg’s Softball Swamp. Warren Central will also play Thursday at the Clarkdale Tournament.
Vicksburg will take the week off for spring break and return to action March 15 at home against Florence.
