A part of every adult wishes they had the freedom and carefree innocence of a child.

Establishing an adult kickball league in Vicksburg is a great avenue for those older than 30 to relive their childhood through a timeless game.

For those unaware, Nat West has developed an adult kickball league known as the River City Kickers for adults 30 to 99 as a health initiative to get people off the couch and moving to avoid chronic health problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol.

Games are held Sunday evening beginning at 3 p.m. at City Park in front of the Vicksburg High School girl’s softball field and next to the City Pool. The league kicked off on Feb. 21st and will play its last game on April 3rd.

Kickball is perfect for a trip down memory lane because it’s a game that requires mild athleticism and a great attitude to play. Even when someone doesn’t boot the pitch into the outfield or simply muffs it for a foul ball, laughs flow from the kicker, pitcher and spectators.

What has recently happened in the city of Vicksburg is kickball has begun to serve as a grounds for fellowship for those older than 30.

Held in city park, is the peaceful gathering of blacks for a chance to enjoy the weather with family, congregate with friends, enjoy good food and music in a relaxed environment. Children play amongst themselves tossing a football around and make new friends in the process. While out in attendance of Sunday’s games it reminded older blacks of a time where they could get together as a community without the threat of violence, disrespect or hatred for another.

With the recent tension between blacks and law enforcement, the worst thought comes to mind at the slightest interaction. An incident regarding where spectators could park brought out local police officers, in conjunction with an alderman, to establish legal parking areas for the event. This interaction was handled swiftly and in a peaceful manner without any judgement of authority.

The River City Kickers have made a much needed impact in the first few games since its inception. Hopefully it remains, a staple for Sunday evening entertainment and a place where adults can feel like children once more.
