The start of spring break was no party for Vicksburg High’s baseball team.

The Gators managed only one hit, gave up five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, and lost 5-1 Monday in their first game at the Lawrence County spring break tournament.

It was the third consecutive loss for Vicksburg (1-4), which has scored a total of seven runs in its four losses so far this season. It has scored two in its last two games, and will get one more crack at the win column when it plays tournament host Lawrence County on Tuesday.

Despite their offensive struggles, the Gators took the lead into the later innings against Florence (6-1).

Latonio Brown and Chandler Luke drew back-to-back one-out walks in the fourth inning and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Cory Russell followed with a hard grounder to second that resulted in an error, and Brown scored to put the Gators ahead 1-0.

The lead was short-lived, though.

In the top of the fifth, Florence’s Windham Whatley led off with a walk and later scored on a pinch-hit single by Garrett Alliston to tie the game. A wild pitch brought in the go-ahead run, and the Eagles padded the lead with the help of two walks, a hit batsman and two wild pitches. The singles by Whatley and Alliston were Florence’s only hits in the inning, and it had four hits in the game.

Brown pitched for Vicksburg and lasted 4 1/3 innings before faltering in the fifth. He struck out eight batters, walked four and gave up two hits. Marshall Banks pitched the last 1 1/3 innings without giving up a run.

Alfred Barnes singled with two outs in the fifth inning for the Gators’ only hit.

Ransom Ford allowed one hit and one unearned run in five innings to get the win for Florence. He walked two and struck out four.
