Lifeguarding class

Registration is now open for an American Red Cross lifeguard certification class that will be held March 28 through April 8 at the Purks YMCA. The 30-hour class will meet from 6 to 8:45 p.m., Monday through Friday, for two weeks. Attendance at each session is mandatory for certification.

Students participating in the class must be at least 15 years old or turning that age no later than April 8, 2016. Candidates must also complete a strength and endurance test that includes a 300-yard swim using the front crawl and breast strokes, and timed strength skills.

The course will be taught by veteran Red Cross instructors Bob and Susan Athow, and Sylvia Gurtowski. For more information, call the YMCA at 601-638-1071 or City Pool at 601-634-4516.

There will be a field clinic on March 23 for all umpires working the 2016 Vicksburg Parks and Recreation Department’s spring season. The clinic will begin at 6 p.m. at the City Park fields. For more information, call 601-634-4514.

Adult softball league

Registration for the City of Vicksburg’s adult softball league is now open and will continue through April 15. Registration packets can be picked up at the Parks and Recreation Department offices at 100 Army-Navy Drive, from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The cost per team is $175, with an extra $10 fee for Warren County residents who live outside the city limits, and a $20 fee for residents from Sharkey, Issaquena and Claiborne counties. A mandatory coaches meeting will be held on April 6, at 6:30 p.m. at the Parks and Recreation offices. All teams must have a representative at this meeting.

River City Showcase

Triumph Ministries will host the inaugural River City Showcase basketball tournament April 9 at Vicksburg High School. The event will feature senior players from more than 20 area high schools. For more information, visit TMIVicksburg.weebly.com.

USM football tryouts

The Southern Miss football program will hold open tryouts on Monday, March 21 at 6 p.m. on its Hattiesburg campus. To participate in the tryout, each player must be a current full-time student at Southern Miss, and must present the following to the football office at the Duff Athletic Center prior to March 21, at 4 p.m.:

4 Proof of registration with the NCAA Eligibility Center at EligibilityCenter.org to make sure that they have their NCAA ID number.

4 A copy of a current physical, blood work (Sickle Cell and CBC), and a copy of their active insurance card.

4 A completed tryout form, which is available online at Southernmiss.com.
