Jackson State’s NCAA Tournament hopes ended with a loss in the final seconds of the Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament championship game on Saturday.
Twenty-four hours later, it lived to fight another day.
Jackson State (19-15) was selected to play in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament on Sunday. It’s the lowest rung on the postseason ladder — after the NCAA Tournament, NIT and even the College Basketball Invitational — but that hardly mattered to the Tigers.
“To be blessed to come off the court with a loss, and say you have another game, that’s a blessing. I don’t think people realize that,” Jackson State coach Wayne Brent said.
Jackson State will play Sam Houston State Monday at 6:30 p.m. in Huntsville, Texas. JSU will travel there from Houston, where the SWAC Tournament was held.
The Tigers have a 19-15 record after Saturday’s 54-53 loss to Southern University in the final seconds of the SWAC championship game. This will be their first postseason appearance since 2010, when they won the SWAC regular-season title and played in the NIT.
Sam Houston State (18-15) will be making its third consecutive appearance in the CIT.
“We’re excited to be playing in the postseason again,” Sam Houston State coach Jason Hooten said in a school release. “We’re proud of how this team has been able to overcome adversity and finish strong with another great record this year. This is a group of high character young men who deserve the opportunity.”
