Vroman powers Vikings past Greenville

Warren Central has one game left before jumping into its biggest week of the regular season. Right now, though, the baseball Vikings are rolling along and sitting pretty atop Division 4-6A.

Tyler Vroman hit a three-run home run in the first inning, John Austin Burris and Nathan Hearn drove in two runs apiece, and the Vikings routed Greenville 12-2 Thursday night at Viking Field.

The win improved Warren Central’s record to 10-3 overall and, more importantly, 3-0 within the division. It’ll play at Brandon on Friday afternoon, and then has two games next week against Clinton that could determine the division winner.

“That’s what you want to be, undefeated in district, pitching well, playing great defense, and getting hot at the plate,” WC coach Conner Douglas said. “We have to be better on the bases, but that will come.”

Warren Central has established itself as a contender in Class 6A with a strong first half of the season, and did little to dispel that notion in two games this week against a struggling Greenville team. WC outscored the Hornets 25-4 in the two games.

On Thursday, Vroman’s homer was part of a five-run first inning that sent the Vikings on their way. They settled in for a couple of innings and then put up seven more runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 12-2 lead and won the game via the mercy rule after the top of the fifth.

Burris had an RBI double in the first inning, and Jacob Cochran had one in the fourth. Cochran finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Burris also scored a pair of runs and Vroman added a sacrifice fly to finish with four RBIs.

Cochran was the only WC player with more than one hit. It used six walks and four Greenville errors to aid its offense.

Booth Buys pitched a complete game. He allowed two runs on three hits, walked one batter and struck out seven.

“We played very well,” Douglas said. “Swung it extremely well, played great defense and Buys threw great. Logan Stewart made two web gems, Vroman hit a bomb and (Josh) Lieberman has really caught fire lately. It was a good night at the park.”
