OXFORD — Southern Miss eased its midweek blues by beating one of the teams that had contributed to them.

Hunter Slater went 3-for-5 with two RBIs, Michael Gilbert doubled twice and Tim Lynch had four hits as Southern Miss beat in-state rival Ole Miss 5-1 Wednesday night in Oxford.

Southern Miss (26-8) snapped a three-game losing streak in midweek contests, and won for only the fourth time in 10 outings on Tuesday or Wednesday. Ole Miss (25-8) lost its first midweek game of the season and had its five-game overall winning streak snapped.

The Golden Eagles won for the fourth straight time overall, and have won 10 of their last 12 against Ole Miss. One of the two losses came last week in Pearl, and this one was close until the end.

With the score tied at 1 in the eighth inning, Southern Miss put runners at first and second with one out. Gilbert delivered an RBI double to left center to break the tie, and USM added two more runs on a single by Storme Cooper and a sacrifice fly by Nick Dawson.

Slater had an RBI single in the ninth inning to make it 5-1.

Nick Sandlin worked out of some trouble in the eighth inning and pitched a perfect ninth for his sixth save of the season. Reliever Cody Livingston (2-2) picked up the win.

Ole Miss used eight pitchers, including seven in the last three-plus innings. Starter James McArthur allowed one run on six hits and a walk, and struck out five in 5 1/3 innings before giving way to the bullpen.

McArthur got a no-decision. Reliever Matt Denny (0-1) pitched a third of an inning in the eighth and took the loss.

Will Golsan had two hits for the Rebels, and J.B. Woodman drove in the team’s only run with a double in the seventh inning.

Mississippi St. 11, Memphis 1

Brent Rooker, Gavin Collins and Luke Alexander all homered as Mississippi State (24-9-1) powered past Memphis (12-21) Wednesday in Starkville.

Rooker hit a two-run home run in the second inning to give the Bulldogs the lead for good. Collins hit a solo shot to spark a three-run, two-out rally in the fifth, and Alexander’s two-run homer in the eighth put a capper on the night.

Reid Humphreys also went 3-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and three runs scored. Nathaniel Lowe had two hits and scored twice, and Ryan Gridley drove in three runs.

Chris Carrier doubled in the second inning and scored on a single by Jacob Elliot for Memphis’ only run.

Mississippi State, which earlier this week ascended to No. 2 in the Baseball America national poll, won for the seventh time in eight games. It’ll host No. 4 Texas A&M in a three-game Southeastern Conference series beginning Friday night in Starkville.

LSU 14, Grambling 11

Beau Jordan and Antoine Duplantis each had three hits and scored three runs, and LSU totaled 17 hits as a team in beating Grambling.

Jake Fraley went 2-for-2 with three RBIs for LSU (15-17), whole Jordan Romero drove in two runs.

Wesley Drain, Daniel Barnett and Tray Bell had three RBIs apiece for Grambling (15-17). Drain went 2-for-6 with a home run and four runs scored.
