Thomas L. “Tommy” Spates died Friday, April 22, 2016, at G. V. “Sonny” Montgomery VA Medical Center in Jackson. He was 67.

He was born in Vicksburg to the late Fannie Mae Combs. He served in the U.S. Army and worked at Vicksburg National Military Park.

He was preceded in death by mother, Fannie Mae Combs; grandmother, Lucy Spates; two sisters, Nancy Watkins and Janice Lee; and three brothers, Jimmy Lee, Eunice Combs and Robert Lee.

Survivors include his wife, Clara Spates of Vicksburg; two sons, Thomas L. Spates Jr. of Vicksburg and Alexander Fultz of Houston, Texas; two stepsons, Charles Grover of Edwards and David James Grover of Duluth, Ga.; two sisters, Florence Slaughter of Dallas, Texas, and Mary Russell of Atlanta; four brothers, Dennis McClain and William Combs, both of Jackson, and Nathaniel Combs and John Lee of Minnesota; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Friday, April 29, 2016 at Mississippi Veteran Memorial Cemetery in Newton under the direction of Lakeview Memorial Funeral Home.

Visitation will be Thursday, April 28, 2016 from 1 to 5 p.m. at the funeral home.
