The city of Vicksburg for the third consecutive year has received $35,000 in Federal Highway Administration funds to provide summer jobs for people between the ages of 16 and 25 through the 2016 Urban Youth Corps Program.

“This year, we plan to hire 13 youth between the ages of 16 and 25, and we will have the program June 13 thorough July 22,” grants coordinator Marcia Weaver said. “This year, our project will include a community-wide parks improvement and landscape maintenance project, and we’ll be using our youth to help revitalize up to 12 neighborhood parks and playgrounds, and existing landscape areas that are located either on or along federal aid roads throughout the city.”

She said the city will begin advertising the program Friday. People interested in applying for the program can get applications at the city’s Human Resources Department at the City Hall Annex, 1415 Walnut St., or online at hr@vicksburgonline.org For more information, call human resources at 601-631-3710. The deadline is May 20.

Besides providing a job opportunity, The Urban Youth Corps Program also teaches the participants life skills such as preparing a resume, how to present themselves at a job interview, credit, saving money and proper diets. The participants work 36 hours a week and attend classes four hours a week.

The program is open to young people 16 to 25 years of age who are enrolled either in high school or college, or have agreed to enroll for a high school diploma or GED, and/or college. All participants will be subject to background checks and drug testing.
