JACKSON (AP) — It remains to be seen if the 2016 Ferriss Trophy will be wrapped in maroon and white, but the trophy presentation ceremony at least will have a lot of it.

Mississippi State has three of the five finalists for this year’s Ferriss Trophy, which is given to Mississippi’s top college baseball player.

The three Bulldogs are pitcher Dakota Hudson and outfielders Reid Humphreys and Jake Mangum.

The other two finalists are Ole Miss outfielder J.B. Woodman and Delta State outfielder Will Robertson.

The winner of the Ferriss Trophy will be announced at a ceremony in Cleveland on Monday. The award is sponsored by C Spire Wireless.

Hudson has been one of the best pitchers in the Southeastern Conference this season. The junior right-hander is 8-3 with a 2.52 ERA and 91 strikeouts. The ERA and strikeout totals both rank in the top 10 in the SEC.

Mangum, a freshman, has been one of the biggest surprises of the season. He ranks second in the SEC and led all freshmen in the NCAA entering the weekend with a .405 batting average.

Mangum has tallied 64 hits and a .519 slugging percentage, with nine doubles, three triples and one home run. The Pearl native has driven in 25 runs and leads MSU with a .460 on-base percentage.

Humphreys, a former Northwest Rankin star, has been a key player for the Bulldogs both at the plate and on the mound.

Humphreys sports a .333 batting average, with 53 hits, 15 doubles, five home runs and two triples. The junior infielder has driven in 44 runs, second best on the team, and has 13 multiple-RBI games this season.

Humphreys has also made 15 relief appearances on the mound. He has 25 strikeouts in 19 1/3 innings of work, and leads the Bulldogs with six saves.

Ole Miss’ Woodman has put together a solid all-around campaign. The junior center fielder is tied for the NCAA lead with nine outfield assists, seven of which have been for outs at the plate.

Woodman is tied for the SEC lead with 12 home runs, and leads Ole Miss in multiple-hit games (21), RBIs (47), runs (41) and steals (10), while also ranking among the top Rebels in batting average (.325), hits (62) and doubles (12). Moreover, he is hitting .340 during SEC play, cracking the conference’s top-10 list.

Known for his clutch hitting, Woodman is 24-for-54 (.444) with runners in scoring position this season. He also ranks in the top 25 nationally with six sacrifice flies.

While the Mississippi State and Ole Miss players are well known, Robertson is the dark horse in the Ferriss Trophy race.

The senior outfielder leads the Gulf South Conference with a .426 batting average, and has 27 doubles, eight home runs and 71 RBIs.

Delta State (38-15) won the GSC tournament and earned a berth in the NCAA Division II South Regional that starts Thursday in Tampa, Fla.

Voting for the C Spire Ferriss Trophy will begin this week. The scouts and coaches, whose votes count for 90 percent of the total, will make their choice this week from among the five finalists. Fan voting, which begins Tuesday at cspoavoting.com and concludes on Sunday, will account for a weighted 10 percent of the final tally.

The winner will be announced at the luncheon on May 23.

Southern Miss pitcher James McMahon won the 2015 Ferriss Trophy. The award has been given annually since 2004, and only three of the 12 winners have come from a school other than Ole Miss or Mississippi State — McMahon, Southern Miss outfielder Tyler Koelling in 2012, and Belhaven infielder/pitcher Craig Westcott in 2009.

The award is named for Delta State baseball icon Dave “Boo” Ferriss, but no one from his alma mater has ever won it.
