COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Ole Miss’ Southeastern Conference title hopes were finished by the time it took the field Saturday, but at least it made sure it wouldn’t have to bear witness to a championship celebration.
J.B. Woodman scored a pair of runs, Tate Blackman went 2-for-4 with a double, and the Rebels beat Texas A&M 3-2 in their regular-season finale.
Ole Miss (40-16, 18-12 SEC) reached the 40-win mark for the sixth time in 16 seasons under head coach Mike Bianco and tied a school record for wins in the regular season.
Ole Miss also earned the No. 7 seed for the SEC Tournament this week in Hoover, Ala. It will face Georgia in a single-elimination game Tuesday at 1 p.m.
Texas A&M (41-13, 20-10) earned one of the four first-round byes that go to the league’s top teams and will play either Missouri or Vanderbilt in the double-elimination round that begins Wednesday. The Aggies could have won the regular-season title with a win Saturday.
Ole Miss took a 2-0 lead with runs in the second and fourth innings. Woodman singled and scored on a base hit by Ryan Olenek for the first run, and then reached on an attempted double play and scored on a single by Colby Bortles for the second run.
Texas A&M cut the lead in half with Boomer White’s sacrifice fly in the fifth, but Ole Miss scored in the sixth with Henri Lartigue’s sac fly.
An RBI single by J.B. Moss in the seventh inning made it 3-2, but the Aggies couldn’t capitalize on several opportunities down the stretch to tie or take the lead. The Aggies left the tying run at third base in the eighth inning. In the ninth, they loaded the bases with one out before closer Wyatt Short got out of the jam to preserve the win.
Short pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings for his 11th save of the season. Sophomore reliever Will Stokes went a season-long 3 1/3 innings for the win. Stokes allowed one run on three hits.
