Alpha Kappa Alpha’s service helps Vicksburg on many levels

The ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority have done it again.

The sorority’s Mu Xi Omega Chapter in Vicksburg got together Saturday and in two hours transformed the Ken Karyl playground into an inviting place for children to play and families to have an outing. From 8 to 10 a.m., the members worked renewing playground equipment, restoring benches and grills, and refreshing plants at the park, which is part of the city’s neighborhood park system. Last year, the sorority refurbished Mission 66 Park with the same dedication and care they gave Ken Karyl. This time, they had a little help from Mayor George Flaggs Jr., North Ward Alderman Michael Mayfield and District 3 Supervisor Charles Selmon, who gave some of their time to the cause.

Mu Xi Omega’s efforts at Ken Karyl and last year at Mission 66 Park are part of Alpha Kappa Alpha’s 1908 Playground Mobilization Community Impact Day. Cleaning the parks is only one of Mu Xi Omega’s community service projects.

AKA has several Community Impact Days throughout the year, like in February, when the traditionally pink and green sorority goes red for the American Heart Association. The next impact day will be Saturday, June 18, when the sorority will mark the longest day by bringing attention and recognition to Alzheimer’s at Vicksburg Mall.

AKA is one of the many civic organizations that contribute time and money to making Vicksburg a better place to live. They do it quietly, and most of the time do not get the credit or the publicity they deserve for their work.

The ladies of AKA deserve our support and our thanks for working to make our city better.
