Curtis cruises to Clear Creek crown

On a day where everyone else seemed to struggle at Clear Creek Golf Course, Channing Curtis had no trouble at all.

Curtis shot a 69 — the only player to break par in the entire tournament — and ran away with a nine-stroke victory in the Clear Creek Club Championship on Sunday.

Curtis finished the two-round tournament with a total of 144. Mark White shot a 74 on Sunday and was at 153, while Keith Ehrhardt and Rocky Shiers tied for third at 160.

Ehrhardt led Curtis by one shot after the first round, but shot an 86 on Sunday to fall well out of contention. Curtis, White and Shiers, who shot a 78, were the only people among 11 players in the men’s division to break 80 on Sunday.

“I think I have more experience playing tournament golf than they do, and that helps,” said Curtis, a 17-year-old senior at St. Aloysius who plays regularly on Mississippi’s junior circuit. “It’s not that I’m miles ahead of everybody skill-wise. These guys are all skilled golfers. Any one of them could have shot what I shot. They just play more on the weekend and they’re not used to playing in tournaments.”

Curtis shot a 75 in Saturday’s first round, but quickly passed Ehrhardt for the lead on Sunday. White was four shots behind Curtis at the start of the final round and made three birdies in the first four holes to mount a challenge.

Curtis, though, extended his lead to six shots with a birdie on the ninth hole and then added two more on Nos. 11 and 13 to pull away.

“It all fell into place and I got comfortable,” Curtis said.

Curtis won the tournament — which is limited to members of Clear Creek’s golf club — for the second time in three years. He won in 2014 and tied for second last year. He’d been in a slump lately, however, and said a good round and a victory were a good cure for those blues.

Curtis added that he plans to take a couple of weeks off to work on his swing and rest before playing in the Mississippi Junior Amateur and Warren County Championship later in July.

The Junior Amateur is July 25-27 at Deerfield Golf Club in Canton. The Warren County Championship is July 30 and 31 at Clear Creek.

“It’s building my confidence back,” Curtis said. “Sixty-nine is a good score in any tournament, anywhere. On Saturday I didn’t do the little things. Today I was able to do those things better.”

In the senior division of the Clear Creek Club Championship, Jeff Cowan shot a two-round total of 151 to secure a four-shot victory over Mike Caruthers.

Cowan shot a 75 on Saturday and had a three-shot lead entering the final round. He then fired a 76 to tie for the low round on Sunday.

David Boolos, who also shot a 76 on Sunday, and Lewis Decell tied for third place with scores of 156. Joe Grayson was another five shots back, at 161, and finished in fourth place.
